Crib Mattress Review – Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer

moonlight slumber little dreamerAs a parent, you want to know that your children feel safe, secure, protected, and comfortable in their surroundings at all times, including when they are sleeping. So, why would you have them sleep on a mattress that is anything but comfortable and healthy? If you are in the market for a new crib mattress, let’s see if the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer can give you what you want for your little ones.

Who Will Like This Mattress? Who Will Not Like This Mattress?
You are looking for a crib mattress that is less toxic (not non-toxic) than regular crib mattresses . You prefer a crib mattress made with natural or organic materials.
Can afford to pay under $200 for a new crib mattress. Prefer to pay $100-$150 for a crib mattress.
Prefer a crib mattress that does not contain latex or wool. If you live in a very hot and humid climate and are worried about your baby getting too hot when they sleep.
Want a crib mattress that is suitable to a baby and then adapts to a toddler as well. Prefer a thick crib mattress.

When I was looking for a crib mattress for Tobias, I was concerned about him inhaling toxic substances from his new mattress. Breathing in stuff like that affect babies and children more than adults because their lungs are still developing. Given that babies sleep 50% to 60% of their day, I wanted to make sure he was sleeping on a surface that was both safe and comfortable. I didn’t know about the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer back then. I wish I did.

What Makes the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Crib Mattress “Healthy”?

What’s inside your regular crib mattress?

Take a look at the materials used to make a lot of the crib mattresses today. Many are produced using a number of harsh chemicals that can be dangerous to babies:

  • Trisanoparticles
  • Polyvinyl (petroleum) chloride (chlorine) or PVC or vinyl – a plastic that is very toxic and a known carcinogen used in the vinyl cover of crib mattresses for waterproofing
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) – used as the main fire retardant in mattresses to help them burn slowly should a fire occur in the bedroom. This chemical breaks down over time and gets released into the air in your bedroom and home.
  • Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs
  • Phthalates – the gas phthalates release into the air contain carcinogenic dioxins
  • Phosphorous
  • Arsenic
  • Antimony (a fire barrier that is now being banned in many states across the U.S.)
  • Chlorine,
  • and many others.

The manufacturers of these mattresses claim these chemicals make their mattresses safer. The California EPA’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and the people of California disagree. In 1986 a law (California Proposition 65 or “The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986”) was passed in California that deemed these chemicals as “chemicals of concern”. There are over 800 chemicals listed under Proposition 65 that can cause harm. What a shock – 800 chemicals!!!

Here’s some more shocking information:

  • Toxic gases are produced in the presence of arsenic, phosphorous or antimony in a crib mattress which may be linked to SIDS, also known as cot or crib death. A doctor in New Zealand came up with the idea that wrapping a crib mattress in a non toxic plastic cover could protect babies from these terrible toxic gases and prevent SIDS.
  • A study has shown that, when you compare old vs new crib mattresses, new ones give off about four times as many VOCs as old crib mattresses. VOCs are potentially harmful chemicals that impact the quality of the air the baby is breathing in.

The Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer crib mattress is made using none of these chemicals. It is one of the few healthier and safe crib mattresses available. Let me explain why.

What’s inside the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer?

The foam core inside the Moonlight Slumber Mattress is still made from polyurethane, which is derived from petroleum. The Moonlight Slumber company adds plant oils into the foam to dilute the presence of the petroleum. This means the mattress is less toxic than a crib mattress that is 100% pure polyurethane.

Certifications

This mattress has been designed with healthy babies in mind. It has received three certifications:

  • Greenguard Gold – This certification means that this mattress emits low emissions of VOCs. Therefore, this mattress is safer for indoor air quality.

Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer

  • Certi-PUR – The foam inside the Little Dreamer is certified to be:

Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Crib Mattress

Safety First

One of the biggest concerns most parents have about the mattresses their babies sleep on is safety. There are actually several safety issues to consider when choosing a crib mattress. Obviously, the biggest concern is fire safety. Since the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer is not made with the usual fire retardants, how can it be fire-safe?

The Moonlight Slumber crib mattress core is wrapped in a fire barrier that is made using minerals instead of harsh chemicals. It is covered in a medical-grade, odor-resistant fabric that is resistant to staining.

The Layers Inside The Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer

This crib mattress is five inches thick. It has four layers:

  • Layer 1 – Non-toxic, medical grade nylon cover that is waterproof. This surface wipes clean with a damp cloth or sponge with warm water. Do not use any chemicals on this surface as you will break down and deteriorate the cover.
  • Layer 2 – Natural, woven fire barrier made with no spray-on chemicals, halogen-free, exceeds federal and state regulations.
  • Layer 3 – Extra-firm, high-density foam infant side for support up to 9 months. This foam contains plant oils.
  • Layer 4 – Firm, high density foam toddler side for more comfort.

Is the Moonlight Slumber Crib Mattress Supportive and Comfortable?

Infants do not need a soft and comfortable mattress. In fact, their mattresses need to be quite firm. They do not have the strength to lift themselves if they are face-down on a soft mattress, but if it is firm, they are able to roll onto their backs more easily. This is why the infant side of the Moonlight Slumber mattress is made with extra-firm, high-density foam.

On the other hand, once your baby is able to move around better, they can graduate to a mattress that is softer and more comfortable. This is where the toddler side of the Little Dreamer comes in. It is softer, but still, provides plenty of support for a toddler’s growing body.

Heat Retention

Something else to consider when buying a crib mattress (or any mattress) is heat retention. This is one of the few things that we don’t like about the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Mattress. It is non-toxic, waterproof, and healthy, but there are no heat regulation features. The cover is cool and breathable, but this might not be enough to keep your baby from sweating at night. Of course, there is always the option to get a cooling mattress pad to put on top.

The Unboxing Experience

With a lot of crib mattresses, just getting them out of the packaging can be a real hassle. And, there is likely going to be some off-gassing for a couple of days. You could take your Little Dreamer right out of the box and let your baby sleep on it that same night. But I wouldn’t. I would leave it to air for a couple of hours at least.

Accessories

I’ve trawled through the 15 pages of questions and answers on Amazon.com to find out some useful information about the accessories you can purchase with your  Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer. I am hoping this will save you lots of time researching!!

If you are still overwhelmed and not too sure what crib mattress to buy, I don’t blame you. Check out my guide on How To Choose a Crib Mattress.

Things To Consider Before Buying This Mattress

Check that the inner dimensions of your crib are a little larger (28″ x 52″) than the dimensions of the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer dual firmness mattress (52″X 27.5 X 5″) for a snug fit. You don’t want any gaps between the end of the mattress and the crib where a toddler’s foot can get caught. Ouch! But you don’t want it too snug,  making it difficult to change the sheet. The Moonlight Slumber company says their mattress will fit any crib that will fit a U.S. Standard size crib mattress.

Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Crib Mattress, Yes or No?

When the time comes to start shopping for a crib mattress, the Little Dreamer is definitely one to keep in mind. While it may not be as breathable as other crib mattresses, it does offer a lot in the way of comfort and support. Also, it contains fewer toxins than a regular crib mattress. All in all, we think this crib mattress represents good value for money considering that it is somewhat healthier than a regular foam-based crib mattress and sees your baby through to being a toddler.

A selection of a crib mattress for newborn baby is an important issue. There are so many options when it comes to choosing the best crib mattress for our new baby according to our the quality, the space we have at home and what we can afford.
