Are These Sleepmaster Mattresses Safe To Sleep On?

What natural vs. synthetic materials are inside these mattresses?

The Zinus Sleep Master Ultima Comfort memory foam mattress range uses synthetic materials for its foam core. These mattresses have a polyurethane base known as BioFoam. This replaces the older form of memory foam that was based on petroleum.

Are the materials safe to sleep on?

For those people who are concerned about the toxins that might be lurking in their mattresses, selecting mattresses with specific certifications is an absolute must. These certifications must come from organizations that are totally independent of mattress manufacturers. Each mattress needs to go through detailed and stringent testing to get certified. This kind of quality is important when you consider you lay asleep on a mattress for one-third of your lifetime.

Can mattresses made from synthetic materials be safe? If you follow my blog regularly, you know I am very concerned about limiting the toxins you breathe in from synthetic mattresses. Although I prefer natural and organic mattresses, if a synthetic mattress has the CertiPUR US certification, then I will review it. If a popular synthetic mattress on does not have the CertiPUR US certification, it will not appear on my site. End of story.

In my opinion, a certified synthetic mattress is safer than a non-certified version. A certified synthetic mattress is more affordable for most people than mattresses made with natural or organic materials. Rant over!

What is Certi-PUR certified?

The Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam Mattress hold a CertiPUR US certification. This certification guarantees the users that the mattress is made without toxic materials and non-environmentally friendly elements. The mattresses are made without lead, phthalate, mercury and other toxic heavy metals. It is also made with low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and without ozone exhausters. When you buy this mattress, you have the peace of mind that you, or anyone in your family, will not acquire or inhale harmful chemicals from it. This testing is top of the line and will not be issued without independent verification that the materials are fully safe and still pass fire-safety standards.

Mattress Construction – Very Important For Comfort

Detailed Features of Each Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam Mattresses

2 essential foam layers

Each Sleep Master Ultima Mattress is built with 2 essential foam layers. These are the memory foam layer up the top with a high-density base support foam layer underneath. These layers are deliberate to make the mattress comfortable and relaxing to sleep on. From the Sleep Master Ultima reviews I read on Amazon, most people found these layers were thick enough to support their body weight, especially their back.

Lightweight but durable

Compared to other mattresses, the Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam Mattress is lighter in weight. It has the ability to support body weight and conform to your shape, allowing you to sleep well and rest better. Bear in mind though, that every mattress lasts about 7-10 years. This mattress won’t be an exception.

Relaxing and Therapeutic Effects

In their Sleep Ultima review reviews on, some buyers went so far to say that they found their Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam Mattress mattress relaxing and therapeutic for their chronic back and joint pain.  I noticed most people with back pain preferred the 6-inch or 8-inch version of the Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam Mattress.

How Much Support Do These Sleep Master Mattresses Offer?

The Sleep Master Ultima mattress is described as being on the “firm side,” especially the 6-inch and 8-inch models. For this reason, the manufacturer recommends that you consider a 2-inch or 4-inch memory foam topper if you prefer a softer, plush mattress.  Alternatively, you could upgrade to thicker 10-inch or 12-inch models for something softer.

Each Sleep Master Ultima mattress has high-density base support foam that is thick enough to support the body without sinking in. This is where the firmness comes in.

Most customers report that the Sleep Master has the same support has other mattresses costing twice or three times as much. This makes the Sleep Master an affordable and quality option for those on a budget.

Is This Mattress Hot Too Sleep On?

One of the biggest questions I receive from readers of this blog about memory foam mattresses is “Are they hot to sleep on?”

The answer is “yes”. Generally, memory foam mattresses retain your body heat compared to mattresses made with natural materials. However, the memory foam inside each Sleep Master Ultima is different to normal memory foam mattresses in 2 main ways: it contains Green Tea Extract and Activ Charcoal.

Green Tea Infusion

Having a mattress infused with green tea makes it smell fresh.

Activ Charcoal

The patented Activ Charcoal absorbs body moisture so your mattress doesn’t get wet with sweat.

No Sweaty Betties Please!

The green tea and charcoal within each Sleep Master Ultima Comfort memory foam mattress help not to trap all your body heat inside the mattress when you are sleeping. Compared to normal memory foam mattresses, you should stay cooler, fresher and sweat-free when you sleep. This is really important if you live in a hot or humid climate like Florida.

Can This Mattress Be Flipped?

This Sleep Master mattress cannot be flipped. In other words, there is a “right side up.”

Flipping a mattress is sometimes done to avoid sagging.

Will This Mattress Sag Over Time?

Here’s the truth – all mattress sag with time.

It’s unlikely your new Sleep Master Ultima Mattress will droop with just months or early years of use.

During the life of your mattress, always perform some easy maintenance measures on your mattress. For example, every 6 months rotate the top of the mattress to the bottom. This simple task will lengthen the useful life of your mattress.

When your mattress begins to sag, there are other things you can do to extend the life of your mattress a little while longer. You can read about what you can do here. But remember, sagging is normal for all mattresses and is not considered a “defect” unless it meets certain specifications (like being deeper than 3 inches). You will need to replace your mattress within 7-10 years, regardless.

Who Makes The Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Mattress?

The Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam Mattress is made by Zinus Inc. This company has been around for 20 years. That’s 20 years of researching, designing, developing and testing mattresses and bedding products like pillows, toppers, bases, frames, beds and headboards. Over those 20 years, ZInus has collected 150 patents relating to their designs. They have won awards too.

The Unpacking Experience

In order to ship these mattresses, Sleep Master has a patented process that compresses the mattresses so that they are not too bulky. Having the mattress in a compressed state for a period of time can add a slight “chemical” smell to the mattress.

The manufacturer believes the slight “off-gas” smell that is associated with the packing process is normal and should fade within 24 hours. They suggest that you allow the mattress to regain its form for about 24 hours before you sleep on it. By that time, there should be no residual smell. For a fresher smell, if you can air the mattress in the sun as well, that would be even better.

According to some customer testimonials, you can expect to have your new Zinus bed set up within 30 minutes. But don’t forget to let it “off gas”. When I bought a memory foam mattress for our guest room, we let it “off gas” for 2-3 days. We placed it near a window so it could get some sun.

Our Final Verdict

I hope you have found my Sleep Master Ultima review valuable.

For me, the biggest hurdle in buying this mattress is that it’s made with synthetic materials. If that doesn’t bother you, then I believe it’s the healthiest possible version of a memory foam mattress you could buy because of each Sleep Master Ultima Comfort memory foam mattress:

  1. Holds a CertiPUR US-based certification, which guarantees that it is free from toxic chemicals and elements, as well as very safe to use and breathe
  2. Is infused with green tea extract and Activ Charcoal to keep your mattress cool and dry and smelling fresh.

In terms of comfort, each of the Sleep Master mattresses I’ve reviewed has 2 essential foam layers that support your body form and shape, and allow you to sleep well and better. These layers are the memory foam layer and the high-density base support foam. The 8, 10 and 12-inch models of the Sleep Master Ultima Comfort memory foam mattress have an additional layer which provides further comfort and joint/back pressure relief.

The affordable price also makes this a great option for those wanting to try a memory foam mattress for the first time. Many people are unsure of moving from traditional coil-spring mattresses, so the Sleep Master series is a good first step.
