What Sets The T&N Mattress Apart From Others?

This foam is unique

Tuft and Needle’s proprietary foam has kept the benefits of memory foam and removed the known disadvantages. The main benefit? Provide pressure relief. The disadvantages? Sleeps hot. That feeling like you’re sinking into the mattress and getting trapped.

Triple certifications

I review many mattresses. Only Tuft and Needle make the effort to certify their mattress 3 times – CertiPUR, Greenguard and Oeko-Tex. Both the well-known Casper and Leesa mattresses are Cert-PUR certified only. This shows the commitment of Tuft and Needle to produce a less toxic mattress. You won’t be breathing in toxic chemicals as you sleep.

Goldilocks 'just right'

This mattress is ideal for those who enjoy a firmer mattress that offers loads of support and just the right amount of cushioning for comfort.

It is a medium thickness in the overall scheme of things, so it is not going to be too soft or too firm. Like Goldilocks said when she climbed into the baby bear’s bed, “This one is just right.” From the T&N bed reviews I read online, this mattress is perfect for all sleepers, no matter their size or weight. The more pressure, the better it reacts.

Are the materials inside the Tuft and Needle mattress non toxic?

A certiPUR-US Certified mattress meets high standards in performance, materials, eco-friendliness and indoor emissions (off-gassing).

Less Mattress Glue

Mattresses are made of multiple foam layers. Each layer is glued together. Those glues are toxic to your health. They reduce the quality of the air you breathe.

The fewer layers in a mattress, the less glue is used. And the less toxic your mattress is to the quality of air.

The Tuft and Needle Mattress only has 2 layers.  That’s good news. Less glue. Less toxic chemicals compared to a mattress with 4 or 5 layers inside it.

Greenguard Gold Certification

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reduce the quality of the air we breathe.

Greenguard Gold is issued by an  independent 3rd party certifying body. This mattress has a certified safe level of VOC emissions. Why is this important? This mattress will contribute less to respiratory issues like asthma when compared to non-Greenguard certified mattresses.

T&N mattress reviews

The whole mattress, not just one layer, is Greenguard certified.

Hypoallergenic

Suffer from environmental allergies? You can benefit from sleeping on Tuft and Needle mattress.

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Resistant to dust mites
  • Antimicrobial.

These benefits are music to my ears!

How can Tuft and Needle keep the bed bugs away? The foam inside the mattress is made of fibers that help to keep dust mites out. The density of the foam also keeps dust mites from being a problem as well.

Foam mattresses such as this one are also resistant to bacteria growth. Sweat in your sleep? You want a mattress with cooling properties, right? Unless that mattress is also antimicrobial, that sweat will penetrate the mattress surface. Mold or bacteria will follow.

Is this Mattress Fire-Safe?

Safety should be a concern when choosing a mattress. Any mattress sold must pass a cigarette test and an open flame test. This is US law. A mattress must have a fire barrier that stops a flame from spreading.

Fire barriers bring peace of mind. That’s the good news. Now for the bad news. Fire retardants take the form of hazardous chemicals in most mattresses.

The Tuft and Needle mattress does not use any chemicals. This company is clever. They use a fire sock. It is a tube-shaped piece of material made from four inert fibers. The fire sock wraps around the foam core in their mattress. The sock is encased by the cover.

Composition and Construction Of The Tuft And Needle Mattress

What is composition?

Composition is about what’s inside your mattress. What kind of materials? What are they made from? Are they toxic? That is, will you be breathing in chemicals? Remember your mouth and nose lie close to the mattress surface each night.

Mattress construction

The T&N Mattress reviews said this mattress helped support their pressure points. It lessened back, hip and leg pain.

You get total body support. The mattress molds itself to the shape of your body. This is going to help you sleep better. No matter what position you prefer to sleep in, the mattress foam adapts. You will wake up feeling less sore. You will feel more awake and energized.

Composition and construction

The surface

The surface is made with a polyester and micro polyamide (nylon) blend. It is soft to the touch. Micro Polyamide is a good substitute for cotton. It is often used in clothing. Here are some of the features of Micro Polyamide I like:

  • Breathable
  • Doesn’t retain moisture
  • Dries quick – up to eight times faster than natural cotton. This is going to help you to sleep cooler for longer periods of time.

A reader of my blog, you know I don’t like polyester and nylon. They are synthetic not natural materials. But here is the saving grace. The mattress cover is Oeko-Tex certified. This certification process tests for a variety of dangerous substances in materials and textiles. Why should this concern you? Your skin is going to be in contact with your mattress for several hours each night, right? You need to know that it is going to be safe for your skin. This is true even if you don’t have sensitive skin.

t & n mattress review

The materials in this mattress are so safe that they can even be used to make mattresses for infants and toddlers.

The top (comfort) layer

It’s three inches of comfortable, supportive, pressure-relieving foam. This foam was invented by Tuft and Needle. It’s called T&N Adaptive Foam. It is an entirely new innovation in foam mattresses. This is not memory or latex foam but it’s designed to give you the benefits of both. What do I mean by that?

It gives you the comfort and pressure relief of memory foam.

If offers the support and breathability that latex foam offers.

How does this mattress do that? It’s made with very dense (2.8 pounds per cubic foot) foam. The gel and graphite inside the foam provides cooling properties.

The bottom (support) layer

You’re looking at seven inches of high-density polyurethane foam. It’s designed to keep your neck and spine aligned.

Here’s how the Tuft and Needle mattress is put together:

Is This Mattress Comfortable?

This mattress conforms to the shape of your body. It will give you a comfortable sleep in three ways:

  • Cradling your body so you feel like you are being hugged all night long.
  • Supporting your body and relieving all of the pressure points.
  • The gel and graphite combination help to keep you from sleeping too hot.

Foam mattresses respond to heat and pressure while you are sleeping. Here’s how it works. Your body weight is evenly disbursed across the mattress surface. If you move, it will move with you. You don’t have to spend a lot of time readjusting once you get into a new position.

Cooling Properties

Tuft and Needle bed reviews

Image used with kind permission of Tuft and Needle

There are three ways that this foam helps you to not sleep hot.

  1. Your body heat is NOT retained inside the mattress. Instead it is drawn into the mattress through the combination of the gel and the graphite. The heat is wicked away and not retained.
  2. The breathable fabric cover lets air flow through the foam. That heat transfer (both into the mattress and out of your body) happens even faster.
  3. With a typical memory foam mattress, you sink in and get too hot. The T&N reviews tell me that the support layer doesn’t sink but supports.

Still feeling hot? Read my tips to cool down in bed.

How Long Will This Mattress Last?

8-10 years lifespan

Tuft and Needle mattresses patented a special foam blend to last longer. The traditional memory foam mattress lasts 5 years. What did the Tuft and Needle mattress reviews say? After 5 or more years, customers said their mattress remained firm. It continued to provide plenty of support where needed. T&N expect their mattress to last for at least 8-10 years before you need a new one.

The Tuft and Needle mattress has been tested rigorously. It comes with a 10-year warranty. This mattress will hold up to the regular wear and tear that any mattress sees. What about sagging in the middle or around the edges? It will happen eventually but not at least a few years.

How can I make this mattress last longer?

Here are my 3 tips.

Rotate your mattress

The company says not to worry about flipping or rotating the mattress to prevent the mattress from sagging in spots. That because of their foam design. I disagree. If it was my mattress, here’s what I would do. Rotate the mattress from top to bottom every month for the first 3 months. Then rotate every season on a 3 months basis. Tip number one done!

Buy a mattress protector

Have allergies like me? Concerned about spills on the bed, especially with toddlers? The T&N mattress surface is not liquid resistant. Think urine, spills and sweat. It doesn’t protect against pet dander or pollen. Or bed bugs.

My second tip is buy yourself a mattress protector.

But be careful.

Some protectors keep the mattress hot. This will be a problem if you sleep hot. Buy a mattress protector that is breathable and resistant to moisture. I recommend the AllerEase zippered mattress protector.

Lift your mattress off the floor

Sleeping on the floor with your T&N mattress? Live in a humid climate? Here’s my third tip to help your mattress last longer. Regularly lift your mattress off the floor. Prop it up against a wall to increase the air flow. Your mattress will keep dryer and cleaner.

How Versatile Is This Mattress?

The Tuft and Needle mattress is compatible with most types of bed frames. This includes box springs, slatted frames and adjustable frames. It works well when placed directly on the floor. You don’t need to have an extra supportive base.

This mattress is available in a variety of sizes:

  • Twin
  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King.

Not too sure about the dimensions of these mattresses, check the US standards here.

Value For Money

The Tuft and Needle Queen size mattress is under $600. This is a high-quality mattress that is comfortable and supportive. Most of the Tuft and Needle bed reviews agree this mattress is good value for money. It is a less toxic mattress compared to traditional memory foam mattresses. This means it’s healthier for you (and the air your breathe). Those 3 certifications – Certi-PUR, Oeko-Tex and Greenguard make a difference.

Why are Tuft and Needle able to sell their mattresses at such a low price? Easy. These mattresses are not sold in stores. Less operating costs. Let’s add it up.

  • No rent to pay.
  • No commission to pay to sales people.

Buy it online only.

Who is the Tuft and Needle Company?

JT’s poor mattress buying experience started a company

JT, a Tuft and Needle company founder, went into a mattress store. He was talked into buying a $3300 mattress by a “sleep expert”. The mattress was delivered to his home. He didn’t like the mattress. Every night he was reminded how he had wasted his money.

He did some research.

His $3500 mattress only cost the manufacturer $300 to make. JT felt ripped off. There was a close to 900% mark-up in the difference in cost vs. the price he paid for the mattress.

Want to know the other stuff JT found out? The tricks. The gimmicks of the mattress companies. Maybe you have experienced yourself? Check out the video below.

Want to be further horrified by what mattress retailers get up to? Take a look at the 3 worst mattress ads ever 3 worst mattress ads ever.

Tuft and Needle is born

JT’s poor mattress buying experience birthed a new and innovative mattress company.

He knew how overwhelming and frustrating shopping for a mattress can be. He wanted to shake things up. Be different. Make it simple. He wanted a one-size-fit-all mattress.

People laughed at this one-size-fits-all concept. JT wanted a mattress that ticked 5 boxes:

  1. Pressure relief for your joints whilst resting at night;
  2. Support;
  3. Cool sleeping;
  4. Easy to ship; and
  5. Inexpensive.

Enter the Tuft and Needle mattress. It offers the same benefits as the more expensive options. But at a fraction of the price. T&N believe that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a great night’s sleep.

The problems with conventional mattresses

Mattresses aren’t complicated.

They use four common materials.

  • Latex foam made from the sap of the rubber tree;
  • Memory foam and polyurethane foam made from petrochemicals;
  • Springs; and
  • Egg crate foam.

Latex, memory foam, poly foam and springs do work to provide support in a mattress. But here are 2 weaknesses Tuft and Needle saw:

  • They aren’t the greatest when it comes to fitting the human form.
  • They have a tendency to not breath very well.

Adaptive Foam adapts to your body

The Tuft and Needle mattress cuts out a lot of those common materials. The company hired chemists to create their own foam. T&N Adaptive Foam. It’s manufactured in the USA. It uses premium polyurethane. It provides support without the use of springs that can be rough on the body.

Why the name Adaptive Foam? What happens when you apply more pressure? The more the mattress will adjust and adapt to your body form. This is the secret to the one-size-fits-all mattress. It suits you. It suits everyone.

Compare this to a standard spring mattress. The springs push back. It uses of a lot of pressure. The T&N Adaptive Foam supports your spine by adapting to its shape. It doesn’t push back. It does use a lot of pressure. Your spine and muscles fully relax. This kind of comfort and relaxation can assist in getting rid of back, shoulder and neck pain naturally

The Tuft and Needle mattress was created with the human posture in mind.

But the innovation doesn’t end there.

Breathability

Standard mattresses don’t breath well. They have more than 2 layers of foam. They are filled with all kinds of thick materials. Glue holds everything together. It makes sense that air doesn’t flow through them very easily. The result? You get hot.

Contrast this to a Tuft and Needle mattress. There are just 2 layers of foam. Less material. The top layer of foam is light. It’s easy for air to get in and out. The result? You get to sleep comfortably. Your sleep isn’t disturbed. No changing positions to keep cool. No waking up sweaty and hot. Who wouldn’t want that – especially if you live in Florida!

Universal firmness

One of the best things I have to share in my T&N mattress review is that the Tuft and Needle mattress has a universal firmness. So whether you prefer your mattress to be firm, or you prefer it on the soft side you’ll get exactly what you need out of one of these mattresses. Because the foam in these mattresses is more dense than usual, you’ll find that it works for people of all preferences.

The company says that because of the foam design, you also won’t have to worry about flipping or rotating the mattress to prevent the mattress from sagging in spots.

Cutting out the middle men

The innovations made by the Tuft and Needle founders went from the mattress to the way they way they priced their mattress. After JT’s experience, the company wanted to find ways of keeping costs low so that the sale price could also be low whilst enabling the company to operate profitably.

All of their mattresses are made in the United States. This allows them to simply make and easily distribute their products rather than having to go through a process of importing them, distributing them to sellers, and so on.

You can buy your Tuft and Needle mattress through their online store, their 3 stores in Arizona and California or through Amazon.com. Stores in Gilbert, Arizona and Seattle.

Their mattresses are delivered to your door.

Everything is kept simple and easy, just the way most customers prefer their shopping experience to be.

Tuft and Needle website

About 36,000 reviews were left by customers on the website itself.  The company had put all their review from Amazon and Google with their reviews collected on the T&N website, so I can’t give you score just for the website reviews.

What Is The Unboxing Experience Like?

One of the biggest complaints everyone has when they buy new mattresses is getting them into their homes and setting them up. This is an even bigger hassle when you have to drag a mattress up any amount of stairs. You won’t have this problem with a Tuft and Needle mattress. It comes compressed and packaged in a small to medium-size box that is easy to handle.

Setting up your new mattress is easy:

  • Place the mattress at either end of your bed frame.
  • Cut into the first layer of plastic and unroll the mattress.
  • Cut away the second layer of plastic.
  • Watch the mattress begin to expand.

Watch the unboxing video below.

Something Else You Might Like: The Tuft and Needle Pillow

This pillow has all of the benefits of both classic pillows and contour pillows, without all of the drawbacks. It’s made in the USA.
t & n mattress

Tuft and Needle offer a 3 year warranty. There’s the 100 night sleep trial available on the pillow as well as the mattress.

The materials inside the pillow

This pillow is made from the T&N Adaptive Foam. So it has the same properties and benefits as the mattress:

  • The pressure relief has been tested;
  • Supportive
  • Comfortable
  • Sleeps cool
  • CertiPUR-US Certified.

The foam is formulated differently in a pillow. You need different support in a pillow compared with a mattress.

The cover

The finely-woven yarn cover is known as Micro Tencel. Here are the benefits:

  • Really soft material;
  • Super-comfy to sleep on;
  • Naturally hypoallergenic;
  • Resistant to bacteria growth;
  • Does not pill;
  • Will stay soft, wash after wash;
  • Passed the Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

The liner

Between the cover and foam is a liner. It completely surrounds the foam. You can’t remove it. The liner makes sure that the foam core is always protected. This is especially important when the cover is in the wash.

Try the pillow with the mattress for 100 nights to see if you enjoy sleeping on it.

This pillow fits any standard size pillow case. But it will seem a bit small if you use a king size pillow case. You can wash and air-dry the cover. Do wash the pillow. Just wipe it down with a damp cloth or sponge.

These mattresses will work with standard sheets in the same way any standard mattress would.

My T&N Mattress Review Verdict

Here is why I think it represents good value for money for these reasons:

  • Comfortable
  • Supportive
  • Non-toxic. The triple certification is important – Certi-PUR, Oeko-Tex and Greenguard.

There is no BS. Two layers. No unnecessary bells and whistles. These tend to make mattresses expensive.

Thank you for the great review. It has convinced me to order this mattress after having read many reviews about other types of mattresses. I have one question: If by any chance I need to return the mattress for whatever strange reason, how can I fold it back in the box after it has been expanded. If it cannot go back to the original size, what I am going to do?

With the warmest regards,

    Caio Luccia!
    Tuft and Needle offer you a 100 night sleep trial. If you do not feel this mattress is right for you after the trial, Tuft and Needle offer a no-hassle return policy. What does that mean? To return your mattress you have bought from them on http://www.tuftandneedle.com, Tuft and Needle will work with you to donate it to a local charity or non-profit in your area. Once your mattress is donated, upload or email them a scanned or photographed copy of your donation receipt and we’ll process your refund in full. This video explains more about the process. https://app.frame.io/f/gRuOnBeu. If you buy the mattress on Amazon.com, they are responsible for the refunds and returns after the 100 night sleep trial. You will have to check with Amazon if they have the same returns policy. Hope that helps.
